A cotter pin, also going under the aliases split pin and cotter key in other countries, are metallic fasteners that possess two tines. These are bent in their construction, not unlike that of rivets and stapes. Generally composed of a thick wire with a half-circular cross section, these little pins come in multiple types and sizes.

Cotter pins are consider amongst the cheapest and most widely used locking fasteners in the world. They are ideal for low stress and low speed parts in particular, including the likes of brake disc locks on heavy motors, and on plush toy or paper puppet joints.

After the part to be locked is nn place, the pin is simply pushed through a neighbouring locking hole until the eyelet or end loop prevents any further progress. Either one of or both legs are bent back afterwards to stop the pin from loosening, effectively preventing the part from coming off the shaft or exiting its housing.
