What is a common use for the cotter pin?

As a company that specialises in spring type components and fasteners, it should come as no surprise that the quality of our merchandise is top notch. Cotter pins are just some of the products that we stock and are a fine example of what we can offer you. Reasonably priced and available in a multitude of sizes, we guarantee that we have the right one to suit your needs.

Perhaps one of the most widely known uses of these pins is for the locking mechanism of castellated nuts, which are commonly associated with automobile hubs. These lightweight nuts are what lock the hubs into the correct position and exercise a certain degree of torque on the wheel bearings. A series of raised tabs are featured along their upper edges, which are somewhat reminiscent of castle battlements.

A hole is drilled through the stub axle and after the nut has been tightened to the ideal torque, the split pin is then positioned through the hole that exists between the tabs present on the nut. Afterwards, the ends are bent backwards so that the pin is locked, preventing the castellated nut from loosening.

Those materials that the split pin is comprised of tend to be malleable, soft metals, including the likes of mild steel and aluminium. These substances make for easy bending of the legs as the pin is locked into position.

Something to take note of however is that the legs will only be able to be bent once or twice before breaking off. Therefore, split pins are best used once and then discarded afterwards. This is very acceptable however, when you consider the fact that these versatile fasteners have a low cost.

At Caleb Components we supply cotter pins of varying sizes, ranging from 1.6mm x 10mm to 13mm x 160mm. As standard, all of our merchandise comes in a zinc-coated finish to give it that extra edge.
