Use of a Split Cotter Pin:
A Split Cotter Pin is a simple fastening device to prevent parts being released off the end of a shaft. Alternatively, they can be very useful to prevent nuts coming undone off a threaded fastener by simply drilling through nut and bolt. The o/d of the pin is made marginally smaller than the hole size to give easy fit. Once inserted the legs are bent over in opposite directions to complete the fastening.
Follow this quick guide to achieve a professional, safe installation every single time.
Step 1: Align the Holes
Ensure the holes in your mating parts are completely clear of debris and perfectly aligned. If you are locking a castellated nut, tighten the nut to its proper torque spec, then advance it slightly until a slot aligns with the hole in the bolt.
Step 2: Insert the Pin
Push the straight legs of the cotter pin all the way through the hole. Keep pushing until the rounded, circular eyelet head sits flat and flush against the component’s surface.
Step 3: Bend the Tines (The Lock)
Use a pair of sturdy pliers to bend the protruding legs apart. For the most secure lock:
- The Over-the-Top Method: Bend one leg straight up and flat over the top of the bolt or nut. Bend the other leg down against the side of the nut.
- The Side-Split Method: Spread both legs outward horizontally in opposite directions, wrapping them tightly around the sides of the hardware.
Step 4: Trim the Excess
Long, dangling tines are a major safety hazard that can catch on clothing or scratch your skin. Use wire cutters or diagonal cutting pliers to trim any excess length, ensuring the blunt ends sit flat against the metal.
Pro-Tip: Never reuse an old cotter pin. Bending and unbending the metal weakens its structural integrity. Always discard the old one and use a brand-new pin to guarantee a safe, reliable hold.
