A split cotter pin is one of the most popular types of engineering pins.
It’s main purpose is very simple, they are simply used to secure other fasteners in place for example a clevis pin. It can also be used a low-tech shear pin.
These pins are inserted into the hole, and the legs of the pin are bent back in opposite directions to secure it in place.
All metric split cotter pins are produced to the DIN 94 standard, and most commonly manufactured with a bright zinc plate corrosive resistant finish.
