Getting the sizing right with cotter pins

Cotter pins, known in the US as split pins, are utilised in a wide array of applications. They can be used to keep a wide array of other fasteners in place, working well with a variety of nuts and bolts. Many products make use of them because they are cost effective and reliable.

These handy components come in a wide array of sizes, including different diameters, lengths, and head sizes. It is important to choose the right size for the job, ensuring that the pins will stay in place once fitted.

In the above regard the diameter and head size are absolutely crucial. If diameters are too narrow the pins will slip free and not hold the fastener in place. On the other hand if they are too thick they will not fit in holes. The head size must be right so that the pin won’t wriggle free over time. It must be larger than the hole in the fastener to achieve this.

There is more flexibility when it comes to the length of cotter pins. If you choose a pin that is too long it can be cut to size relatively easily to suit the applications. Selecting components that are too short should be avoided though as this affects their performance. Remember you want the length to be enough that there is minimal chance the pin will come free.

At Caleb Components we provide cotter pins in a wide selection of sizes to suit different applications. They range from the small 1.6mm x 10mm to vastly larger 13mm x 160mm. All of them are made with care, ensuring they are the very highest quality.

The cotter pins we offer are suitable for an array of uses. They are zinc plate finished as standard, ensuring they can be used in environments were corrosion is a concern. The plating protects the steel substrate, reducing the risk of rusting.

We always urge clients to take caution when fitting the pins to ensure they don’t damage the protective coating. If they are planning on cutting them to size we remind them that the cut edge will be unprotected unless they take action to do it.
